When seeking technology for laboratories and classrooms, look for opportunities at technology companies for equipment and matching grants through established company programs. Below are examples of these programs at Sun Microsystems, Intel, IBM and Hewlett-Packard.

SUN MICROSYSTEMS

Matching Equipment Grants
Sun periodically offers an opportunity for collaboration to educational institutions by investing in academic and research lab environments that are used by students. The program offers matching grants of new or upgrades to existing desktop equipment for use in student academic and research laboratory environments. The current program runs from August 1 - October 25, 2002. Follow the process outlined on the website to apply. http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/edu/promotions/matchinggrant/

Academic Equipment Grants
Sun also grants equipment to eligible organizations that have developed creative projects that address the company’s investment priorities and create partnerships for success. Grants are made on a published quarterly calendar for hardware donations only and must be reviewed and supported by the local Education Sales Representative. For more information about program priorities and how to apply please see: http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/edu/promotions/grants/.

INTEL CORPORATION

Intel offers computer hardware and peripherals to establish curriculum or teaching laboratories within disciplines of interest, including computer science, electrical engineering and computer engineering. Faculty prepare a proposal that outlines the courses to be impacted, the number of students likely to utilize the labs and/or the focus of the research to be performed. Proposals, generally reviewed up to four times per year, are submitted through the CFR2 office, in consultation with the Intel Office of Academic Relations. Please see the following website for more information: http://www.intel.com/research/university/index.htm.

IBM

The IBM Shared University Research (SUR) program connects researchers at universities with personnel at IBM departments such as research, life sciences, global services, and development and product labs. This program is aimed at making an impact in an area of significant interest to the university and IBM—not just at supporting a single investigator or research project. All SUR requests must be submitted via IBM employees who interact with faculty members or UCLA, primarily on a technical basis. Please see the following website for more information: http://www-3.ibm.com/software/info/university/sur/.

HEWLETT-PACKARD

The Product Gift Program is an employee-initiated program that encourages support of educational institutions with product donations. HP and the employee share the cost of the donation, with the employee contributing 50 percent of the published price of products. Groups of employees may pool their resources to give larger gifts. This program can work well with groups of alumni. Please see the following website for more information: http://grants.hp.com/us/gift_program.html.
