Weathering the Economy (click

As the nation enters the fourth straight year of a downturn in the market, it
is important to remain sensitive to and informed of the circumstances of each
foundation and corporation.
For example, certain foundations such as The David and Lucile Packard Foundation
consolidated their Science and Conservation programs this year. The Henry Luce
Foundation reduced gifts for most program areas. Both foundations are heavily
invested in their respective founders’ corporation and cannot divest of
the stock despite the difficult economic times.
In addressing the budget cuts in education, Sun Microsystems is offering a program
geared to the research community. If you are working with a faculty member that
is in the process of applying for or has received a research grant from a government
agency, they may be eligible for program participation. This opportunity could
make it much easier for the UCLA research community to maximize their grants.
Some foundations are receiving an overwhelming number of proposals resulting
in a delay in the funding process. For example, a recent January submission
to a Los Angeles-based foundation will not be considered until the December
2003 board meeting. Therefore, it is important to plan strategically with faculty
members and encourage them to remain as flexible as possible.
